MILANO DESIGN WEEK 2023 SUPER ROBOT BY CERAMICHE PUZZO FOR MARTINO MIDALI
Goldrake and Jeeg Robot are the new superheroes representing the values of the maison reinterpreted in a design way. Four unique limited edition pieces in addition to the two special versions on sale for Milan Design Week 2023.
Four limited editions of four unique piece of art, rich in different meanings and symbolising those values that resist time and which become the key, to a healthy relationship with the world, today as yesterday. Jeeg Robot and Goldrake, the two stars of the Japanese cartoons that made history, lingering in the hearts of children and today grownups, are the focus of the collaboration between Martino Midali and Ceramiche Puzzo for Milan Design Week 2023.
The meaning of the choice of anime culture Icons is a symbolical reference to the brand's philosophy pillars that can be seen in the different aesthetic representation of the Super Robots called to save the world and spokesmen for a message that didn't lose its power or emotional character with time. A message that belongs to the playful and childlike sphere of memory.
The 65cm sculptures, made of white pottery using the slip-casting technique, are totally handmade by Ceramiche Puzzo, one of Milan's most historic workshops. To finish them off, they have hand-coloured it using two types of firing at 980°C and crystallisation. The colours identify the robots' souls: the rainbow Goldrake evokes peace, the pink one with a red heart praises love and condemns all forms of violence against women; the green and blue Jeeg Robot fights for the environment, while the gold one is dedicated to Martino Midali's 40th anniversary. Come in our Brera (Milan) boutique in Via Mercato - from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 April - and will be the manifesto of the values they stand for, standing on a bed of ceramics, prints and discarded materials to defend their ideals.
"Japanese cartoon robots are part of the popular imaginary that identifies them as reassuring peacekeepers: in this era, we need to know that someone or something is watching over us to protect us," said Martino Midali, who relied on Ceramiche Puzzo for the special partnership. The milanese company has been crafting ceramics, plaster moulds, lathe work and clay sculptures for 50 years to bring objects to life using the traditional biscuit technique, i.e. soaking them in glazes and then re-casting them. From the workshop in the Dergano area of Milan, which has become over time a meeting spot for artists who trust Stefano and Rizzardo Puzzo and their family's experience of strong craftsmanship and artistic identity. Stefano and Rizzardo have created two different versions of Jeeg Robot and Goldrake, one more classic, the other more artistic, both tinted with copper oxide and coloured enamels, red, orange and yellow, in addition to the limited edition for Midali. These robots will be on sale in the Brera store and on the martinomidali.com website for the entire duration of Design Week.
Martino Midali has also created a line of canvas shopping bags with the same subjects, which will be on sale during Design Week and part of the proceeds will be donated to the "Cerchi d'Acqua" anti-violence centre. A commitment the brand renews once again, demonstrating its support for social issues of common relevance, even during a moment of fun such as Design Week.
